Digital Imaging
"Digital imaging is a means to an end... a process rather than a product... a creative and cost-efficient approach to managing data, text, and graphics using the computer and electronic technologies.
'Desktop publishing' which led a revolution in the mechanics of graphic design, is the forerunner of today's digital imaging industry. Unlike desktop publishing, however, digital imaging involves both (prepress) input and (printing) output.
Sometimes called 'on-demand' printing when referring to output, digital imaging currently serves a variety of large- and small- format graphics, although it is primarily oriented toward short-run production.
Among the commercial applications of digital imaging are advertising specialties, architectural signage, badges, blueprints, bumper stickers, decals, displays and exhibits, fleet markings, signage, paper products, photo prints and retouching, plastic cards, prepress services, presentation graphics, product identification and textiles.
Through digital imaging, buyers and creators of printed products - on paper and a myriad other substrates - are realizing increased efficiency and versatility, quicker turnaround times, as well as greater cost and production controls." -Digital Printing & Imaging Association
